An American Classic and Twilight

7 Jun

Though we never got around to talking about it today, the American classic that I’ve been thinking about the most this week is George David Weiss, the man who wrote not only “What a Wonderful World,” made famous by Louis Armstrong and a hundred others, but also the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” a song so idiosyncratic and wonderful it’s hard to believe anyone sang it first. But his obituary (he died this week) tells me that song made the Tokens famous.

And if you were curious to hear more, and more lucid talk about teen girls, Twilight, and what it says about the influence of sex on youth, here’s a link to the conversation I was talking about. This link probably won’t still be good next week, so if you’re interested, give it a shot now.
